Convener calls for early meeting with Serco

OIC convener, Councillor Steven Heddle, has called for an early meeting with Serco, following Tuesday’s announcement that the suspension of the Northern Isles ferry service contract award had been lifted.

Councillor Heddle said: “These lifeline ferry links with the Scottish Mainland are of crucial importance to Orkney and it is now important that we meet with Serco at the earliest opportunity.

“We need to discuss the issues we see as important in ensuring that the present high standards of service for passengers, vehicles and freight are maintained.

“It is important that any efficiencies planned by Serco are achieved through operational savings wherever possible, rather than through a reduction in the service provided for customers. We would like to contribute to the company’s decision making process before any proposed efficiencies are implemented.”

Among key issues the OIC wants to raise with Serco are:

  • plans for passenger and freight timetables, fares and tariffs.
  • The transfer arrangements for NorthLink’s current employees.
  • Opportunities for local businesses to continue providing goods and services to the ferry operator.
