CAB warning against bogus callers

People in Orkney are being warned to be on their guard against bogus callers claiming to be from the Citizens Advice Bureau, offering to write off debts.

Kirkwall CAB manager, Alison Gunn, said several people, including CAB staff, have been “cold-called” in the scam.

“These callers are saying they are part of a Government initiative to help people who are in financial difficulty by writing off their debts, and are asking people for their bank details.

“I want to say categorically that the CAB never makes unsolicited phone calls and our advice is always free, confidential and completely impartial; whoever is making these calls is certainly not doing so on our behalf.

“Nor are we aware of any Government scheme which would require people giving their financial information over the telephone.”
