Busy weekend of sport in store

Orkney take on their Shetland rivals in inter-county netball on Saturday.

It is set to be a busy weekend of sport this weekend, with one inter-county clash already underway.

While there is football and rugby matches in Orkney, the county’s netball and pool players are in Shetland to take on their northern rivals.

At present, Orkney men’s and women’s ‘B’ pool players are in action in the Lerwick Legion, while the ‘A’ matches go ahead tomorrow from 12 noon.

Orkney’s netball players are also in Shetland, seeking to gain revenge for the comprehensive defeats they suffered at home last year, in the 37th inter-county fixtures.

The ‘A’ sides are first on the court at the Clickimin Centre in Lerwick on Saturday at 12 noon, while the ‘B’ sides are set to do battle from 2.30pm. The matches are scheduled to be streamed live on Facebook courtesy of BBC Radio Shetland.

There is also inter-county squash scheduled, with a ten-player strong Orkney contingent crossing the Pentland Firth to take on Caithness.

At home, Orkney Football Club and Orkney Rugby Club are preparing for two vital games at either ends of their respective leagues.

The county’s footballers, one point behind Invergordon and Golspie at the top of the North Caledonian League, take on third-from-bottom Tain St Duthus as they make a final push for the league title. The match is set to kick-off at 12.30pm at KGS 3G.

Over at the Pickaquoy Centre pitch, Orkney’s rugby players will be desperate to haul themselves out of the BT National League Division 3 relegation places against Hillhead Jordanhill.

The match is set to kick-off at 3pm, and with Dalziel four points above Orkney, the home side, who do have a match in hand, know that a win against their Glasgow rivals would provide a fantastic boost in their battle to beat the drop.

Orkney’s junior badminton players are also in action in two inter-county clashes, with the Under-18 side up first at the KGS on Saturday from 1pm, while the Under-13s are up on Sunday from 10am, also at the KGS.
