The Pickaquoy Centre have announced a series of changes set to be introduced to the ActiveLife scheme.

The scheme is coming to the end of an initial two-year pilot period in January 2019, and the centre’s new managing director James Linklater says ensuring the scheme’s sustainability is paramount.

Launched in January 2017, ActiveLife allows individuals or families access to the centre’s and 11 other council-owned fitness facilities for a monthly membership fee.

From Monday, October 1, changes to the scheme include:

  • A fee for gym inductions will be reintroduced.
  • Learn to Swim lessons will be charged at the full rate bringing them in line with all other junior courses.
  • There will be an increase of 49p per month on individual and family memberships, Budget and ActiveIslands memberships will remain unchanged.

Mr Linklater said: “There will need to be some changes to the programme prior to the overall review, and while we are aware some users may be disappointed to see these offers go, we can confirm that climbing and bouldering will remain part of the ActiveLife membership package at this stage. In addition, a whole host of new group exercise classes have been added to the timetable including Pilates, Aqua Natal and the return of Clubbercise.

“Our aim is to provide a membership scheme that is fit for purpose and has long-term sustainability for the benefit of the entire Orkney community. To this end we appreciate our customer’s understanding as we evaluate and modify what is currently in place.”
