Orkney Islands Council has appointed Ian Berstan as acting headteacher at Stromness Academy.

Mr Berstan is being seconded for 12 months from his role as depute headteacher at Peterhead Academy in Aberdeenshire.

He will meet and work with staff at Stromness Academy during two in-service days next week.

Peter Diamond, the council’s head of schools, said: “We are working closely with the councils in Shetland, the Western Isles, Highland, Moray, Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City to develop ways for senior staff to gain leadership experience across our schools.

“It is good that we can offer Ian this opportunity. He will bring a wealth of experience with him.

“I am looking forward to welcoming him to Orkney and working with him over the next 12 months.

“In future I would hope that senior staff from Orkney could be offered similar secondment opportunities at schools in the other council areas.”

Mr Berstan’s start date is expected to be confirmed shortly.
