Work began on construction of the new stage and public area outside the Stromness Town House this morning.

The Stromness Community Council project is expected to take around eight weeks to complete and will be used for all kinds of events — from Shopping Week to the myriad of music festivals the town hosts.

Community council chairman George Argo, who cut the turf, said: “It will primarily be an all-purpose area, open all year, and when we have events like Shopping Week, the Folk Festival, the Blues Festival, anything at all, there will be a public stage here for use.

“We’re really excited that we’re making a start today because it’s been a long while in the planning of this and there’s been a lot of hard work by the subgroup of the community council.”
