Women’s Aid Orkney release new children’s book

“It’s the little things in life that matter most of all, and how they make us feel, sad or happy, big or small.”

So begins a new children’s book, developed by Women’s Aid Orkney and released earlier this week.

Created by children who are supported by Women’s Aid, during peer group workshops, It’s all about the little things brings together the precious moments of life — both good and bad — into a short illustrated book.

Michelle Robertson from Women’s Aid Orkney explained that, during Children and Young People (CYP) Peer Group sessions held by the organisation this past summer, children aged 4 to 13-years-old were asked write down their ideas about the good and bad bits of life.

“Initially, we hadn’t planned to make a book, but the ideas that the kids came up with really came together,” she said.

The book highlights emotions, both negative and positive, that many children experience. This includes the excitement of Christmas and birthdays, as well as the feelings of being confused, scared, or invisible.

With all royalties going back to Women’s Aid, Michelle also hopes that this book will raise awareness of how deeply children can be affected by the actions of adults.

“The name It’s all about the little things really works on two levels,” she added.
“The book is all about the little things in life, but also about the little people in our lives.”

It’s all the little things is now on sale. The official book launch will take place at The Orcadian Bookshop, next Friday, December 23.
All royalties will be donated to Women’s Aid Orkney, a specialist domestic abuse charity serving communities across Orkney.
