Whit’s on this weekend?

At a loss for what to do this weekend? Have no fear! The Orcadian is here with a few peedie suggestions…

ROAR — Loud ‘n’ Live, Matchmakers, Kirkwall

A group of volunteers from Kirkwall Grammar School (KGS) has organised a live music night in aid of Samaritans Orkney.

ROAR, a team of S6 pupils, working with Voluntary Action Orkney (VAO), will be hosting a top-class line-up of local acts, tonight.

Loud ‘n’ Live 4, set to take place at Matchmakers, Kirkwall, will feature performances from The Chair, Maggie and James, The Aims, RumHam, Andrew Taylor Group, Rachel Hirst, and The Cartel.

Alan Braxe, The Sound Archive, Kirkwall

Tomorrow night, Saturday, sees the Sound Archive, Kirkwall, add yet another visiting act to its rapidly increasing roster, with French House DJ and producer Alan Braxe set to take the stage.

The Toulouse-based musician first gained attention during the golden years of French electro, in the late 90s, and has worked with key players on the scene such as Fred Falke and Ignition Technician.

With the dark nights growing closer by the day, this looks to be the perfect gig to get a final taste of some summer beats.

Festival of the Horse & Boy’s Ploughing Match, South Ronaldsay

Tomorrow sees the annual South Ronaldsay Boys’ Ploughing Match and Festival of the Horse take place.

At 2pm, the event will kick off with the parade of “horses” at the ’Hope Community School, dressed in decorated costumes, representing the old ploughing horses of days gone by.

Then, for 3.30pm, the boys will make their way to the Sands o’ Wright, where the ploughing will take place.

St Magnus Way, Finstown to Orphir

Tomorrow, Saturday, sees the launch of the penultimate section of the St Magnus Way.

The walking trail, which is being opened in five sections over the course of 2017, marks 900 years since the martyrdom of Magnus Erlendsson and the route his remains took, after his death in Egilsay.

St Magnus Way will pass the halfway point this Saturday, as the penultimate section between Finstown and Orphir is launched.

The day will begin with a talk about two other important characters in the story — Haakon and Rognavald. Fran Hollinrake and Sarah Jane Gibbon will bring their world and concerns to life at 10am in Firth Kirk. This will be followed by the walk itself, leaving Firth Kirk at 11.15am and continuing to Orphir and Earl’s Bu before finishing with refreshments at the Orphir Kirk.

Lifeboat Open Day, Stromness

The Stromness Lifeboat Open Day is due to take place in Stromness Harbour this Sunday.

With tours of the lifeboat itself, as well as teas and home bakes, this looks to be both a fun and educational day out.

It is hoped that lifeboats from Longhope and Thurso will join Stromness Lifeboat in the harbour for the event which is part of the 150th anniversary of the RNLI basing a lifeboat in Stromness.

Bio Blitz, Happy Valley

Ever wondered what’s involved in wildlife recording? Orkney Wildlife Information and Records Centre (OWIARC) will be hosting a Bio Blitz event in Happy Valley tomorrow, from 11am until 3.30pm.

The event will be aiming to record as many of the plants and small creatures as possible that live there to help build an understanding of the biodiversity within this special place. Findings will be added to the Orkney OWIARC data base, based at the Orkney Library and Archive.

Experts for various groups will be on hand to help identify species. Children are welcome, but must be supervised by a responsible adult.
