TODAY: VERY WARM INLAND, COASTAL FOG
TONIGHT: DRY, FOG BECOMING WIDESPREAD
TOMORROW: COASTAL FOG, WARM SUNSHINE INLAND
DAYS 3-5:. SHOWERS, BUT BECOMING CLEARER AND FRESHER
DAYS 6-10: SHOWERS & COOLER NW'LY WINDS
SUMMARY
Mist and fog patches becoming confined to coasts, with warm sunshine developing inland. The haar returning again overnight.
Another warm day on Friday, as fog and low cloud burns back to the coasts, though this may be a slow process in Shetland. Light S to SE'ly winds.
Over the weekend, we will see a gradual change to cooler, clearer and showery conditions, though still some sunshine. Light SE'ly winds becoming NE'ly later.
Next week, winds are expected to be generally W'ly in direction, so temperatures will be near-normal. There will also be some showers at times, but also sunny or clear spells.
GENERAL SITUATION AND SYNOPSIS 06:00.
Pressure is high to the east and low to the west of the UK, resulting in a warm and moist SE'ly airflow over the Northern Isles.
During the next few days a waving front to the west - marking the division between very warm Continental and cooler Atlantic air - will edge closer. While it is not expected to reach the Northern Isles before the weekend, it will bring more widespread showers in from the southwest by Saturday.
Filling low pressure will drift east over the British Isles later in the weekend, with a NE to N'ly airflow developing as it moves away into southern Scandinavia by Monday. By midweek, with pressure building to the west, the airflow is expected to be N to NW'ly in direction.
Later next week, we may see pressure again building over the UK. However, this time the focus of high pressure is predicted to be to the south of the British Isles, with pressure low to the north. As a result, the airflow will be a 'normal' W'ly, rather than the recent hot SE to E'ly.
FORECAST FOR NEXT THREE DAYS
Confidence level: Weather type - high/medium. Timing – high/medium.
Today temperatures rising to around 17° or18° Celsius on coasts, but 20° to 22° Celsius inland, and possibly even 23° Celsius in favoured locations in the West Mainland. Mild overnight, with lows of around 13° Celsius. Friday possibly a degree or two cooler.
THURSDAY 2nd: During the morning low cloud, mist and fog patches will become confined to coasts. It should be a dry day, with sunny periods developing inland. It will again be very warm - and hot in the West Mainland - with mainly light F2-3 SE'ly winds. A mainly fine end to the day with some warm evening sunshine, but haar is expected to spread inland again overnight, this more so across Shetland where, down the east side, coastal fog could have persisted all day.
Sea state – Smooth, with a <1 metre SW'ly swell.
FRIDAY 3rd: Overnight fog and low cloud burning back to the coasts again during the morning, with more warm sunshine inland. With light F2-3 SE'ly winds, mist and fog still affecting coasts from time to time. After a dry day across the area, during the evening and overnight, showers are likely to edge in across Caithness and Orkney from the southwest.
Sea state – Smooth, with a <1 metre SW'ly swell.
SATURDAY 4th: Rather cloudy with widespread showers, some heavy and possibly thundery. Misty in places, especially on southern and eastern coasts exposed to a F3-4 SE'ly breeze.
Sea state – Smooth, with a <1 metre SW'ly swell.
