The Orkney Museum’s Christmas Exhibition opens today, Saturday, with a celebration of a unique Orkney event.

The Boy’s Ploughing Match takes place at the Sand o’ Wright, in South Ronaldsay, every August.

The exhibition will not only feature the miniature ploughs used by the boys, but also the Festival of the Horse, with its beautiful and elaborate costumes.

Ploughs and costumes from different time periods be on show.

Tom Muir, the Orkney Museum’s engagement and exhibitions officer, said: “When the Boys’ Ploughing Match committee first approached me regarding an exhibition, I immediately thought of our Christmas show, which is usually a colourful and fun display for all the family.

“This year the slot if slightly longer than usual, as we have a travelling exhibition starting in mid-February, which gives people a longer opportunity to see this one-off collection.

“The costumes, ploughs and memorabilia are all loaned by members of the public, making this a unique exhibition. It will be a busy show, with lots to see and to delight both young and old alike.”

The Boys’ Ploughing Match exhibition runs at the museum until February 11, 2017.
