Sky Notes: solar eclipse due on Monday

A negative diagram of Monday’s expected solar eclipse.

A total eclipse, partially visible from Orkney, is on the way and Rousay astronomer and weather watcher, John Vetterlein has the details for how and when to see it.

The total eclipse of the Sun will take place on Monday, August 21, with only 4.4 per cent of the Sun’s disc covered at maximum eclipse.

CAUTION: Never view the Sun direct with or without optical aid. Use appropriate filters or the projection method.

• The Beginning of partial phase will take place at 18h 36m 23s; Sun’s altitude: 7.4°.

• Maximum eclipse will be at 18h 52m 41s; Sun’s altitude: 5.4°.

• The end of partial phase will take place at 19h 08m 52s; Sun’s altitude: 3.4°.

Mr Vetterlein added that he is always interested to receive observations for meteors from readers, with the Perseid shower is likely to be active for a further four days or so. He can be contacted at braevale@mail.com.
