Shore Street car park temporary closure

Harbour Street redevelopment plans
The Shore Street car park is due to be closed for 10 weeks, as part of the ongoing redevelopments on Harbour Street and Shore Street.

Orkney Islands Council (OIC) has advised vehicle drivers that the temporary closure Shore Street car park — also known as the Waterfront East car park — is due to start next Thursday, June 1.

According to OIC, the 10-week closure is to enable construction of the next stage of the Kirkwall Flood Prevention Scheme, around the Kirkwall Pier entrance and the Shore Street car park.

During this phase, there will be alternative access to the Kirkwall Pier. The Shore Street car park will provide a temporary exit from the pier.

OIC head of infrastructure, Darren Richardson, explained that a number of options were discussed with the Roads and Marine Services teams and the contractors involved, before taking this decision.

“This option avoids the need for temporary traffic lights in the area,” he said.

“We want to keep traffic flowing as much as possible, particularly with the ambulance station based nearby.”

Mr Richardson took the opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused due to the closure. He added that OIC will also take this opportunity to create two disabled parking spaces in the car park.

OIC have directed drivers to use alternative parking, available at Great Western Road (South) with 208 spaces and Waterfront (West) – opposite the Ayre Hotel – with 52 spaces.
