More info

The Shetland coastline has been the focus for human settlement and activity from the earliest times and, today, is a rich resource of archaeological sites. Many of these are now at risk from coastal erosion.

This volume brings together the findings of an extensive programme of coastal survey and excavation in Shetland undertaken by EASE Archaeology for Historic Sotland in partnership with Shetland Amenity Trust. This saw hundreds of sites of all types and periods documented from Neolithic tombs to whaling stations, many for the first time.

In addition, three key eroding sites, together spanning almost two millenia of human activity, were excavated: Cruester (Bressay), Bayanne (Yell) and Burland (Trondra).

Presented here, the findings provide considerable new insights and enhance our knowledge of Shetland's ancient past.
