Shetland footballers seal Stuart Cup win

Orkney goalscorer Jamie Flett holds his head in his hands as Shetland beat Orkney 4-1 in the football.

Orkney were denied a third consecutive junior inter-county triumph as Shetland’s footballers ensured the Stuart Cup stayed in Shetland.

There was nothing to choose between the sides ahead of the football, with both sides winning two competitions each and level on 139.25 points.

Jamie Flett provided early hope that Orkney would be able to retain the Stuart Cup when he scored a sublime opener, firing the ball into the net from all of 30 yards.

Shetland pegged the visitors back before half-time however, before three unanswered second half goals sealed a 4-1 victory.

The result means that Shetland, who now have 36 victories, won the 70th junior inter-county competition with 159.25 points to Orkney’s 144.25.

Earlier in the day, Orkney’s hockey players did the business in Brae as they won 4-0.

Claire Rendall, Bethin Macdonald, Kayla Smith and Isla Tait all got their names on the scoresheet in a victory which put Orkney level on points.
