Orkney RFC suffer cup disappointment

The referee signals Scott Rendall's second half try which came from a well worked line out drive.
The referee signals Scott Rendall’s second half try which came from a well worked line out drive.

Orkney rugby club’s first XV were beaten 17-47 by GHA this afternoon in the first round of the BT Cup.

Orkney led for much of the first half courtesy of a Philip Ross try after good work down the right wing by Scott Rendall.

However, the visitors, who play two divisions higher than Orkney, scored shortly before the break to take a 7-12 lead into half time.

They then showed their class with a quick-fire burst of three tries at the start of the second half to take the game away from Orkney.

The home team, who played well in patches and dominated the scrums, fought hard to the end though, with consolation scores from Rendall and David Hamilton giving the score line some respectability.

Next week Orkney kick-off their BT National League Division 3 campaign with an away tie against Highland RFC.
