Ongoing problems with phones and internet on north isles

Problems with phones and broadband services in the north isles are ongoing this afternoon, according to BT, following last night’s lightning storms.

According to a spokeswoman services in Stronsay, Westray, Papa Westray, North Ronaldsay, Birsay and Eday are currently affected by a radio failure on Sanday.

BT are sending radio experts out to the island by helicopter, with a view to restoring services as soon as possible.

The spokeswoman said: “As those without telephony – in Westray, Papa Westray , Birsay and North Ronaldsay – will not be able to make any landline calls, including 999 calls, emergency services have been informed so they can initiate their contingency procedures.

“Additionally, lightning may have caused damage to individual lines on the network. This may also take some time to become apparent. Anyone experiencing difficulties with their service should report it to their service provider who will liaise with Openreach on their behalf.

“This can escalate priority cases and will be able to help with practicalities such as diverting incoming calls to a mobile phone where possible. We are not aware of any major issues on EE’s mobile network on Orkney at the moment.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
