Gold medalist Tait set for 5,000m

Anna Tait leaves Isle of Man’s Rachael Franklin in the shadows, as she nears the finishing line in yesterday’s 1,500m.

Fresh from her gold medal success, Anna Tait is back in action this evening, in day four of the NatWest Island Games in Gotland.

The runner, who produced a phenomenal performance to win gold and set a new Games record in the 1,500m last night, will compete in the 5,000m this evening, scheduled to start at 6pm (5pm GMT).

With hopes of a medal raised following yesterday’s scintillating run, there is set to be another large and vocal Orkney contingent in what is a bright day of sunshine here in Gotland.

Elsewhere, Tim Ross is also in action in the 5,000m men, while 100m bronze medalist Taylah Spence and Mia Maciver are competing in 200m heats.

Orkney’s golfing quartet of Ewan Rendall, Michael Schinkel, Scott Walls and Hamish Gorn continue where they left off yesterday, this time at Visby Golf Club.

Matthew Reid is the sole Orkney representative in the last 16 of the badminton, while Ruth Flett and Jane Hill face a Faroese pair in the last 32 of the doubles. Liam Delday and Emma Work are also in action in the mixed doubles, facing the fifth seeds from the Isle of Man.

The cyclists also take to the road for the road race today, Olga Hamilton is Orkney’s sole representative in the women’s, while Tom Lynch, Torquil Clyde, Keith Chalmers and Paul Kerr are in the men’s.

Shooter Bobby Spence is in action in the 50m 3 Position small-bore, while Donald Sinclair and Spence — bronze medalists already at the Games — will compete in the 50m prone event.

Mia McAllister has reached the final of the women’s 100m breaststroke, which will take place tonight.

Orkney’s archers are also in action once more in a busy day of head-to-head knockout competitions in both recurve and compound.
