Orkney Youth Development Group LogoOrkney is playing host to a footballing feast this weekeend, with the second Orkney Youth Football Festival.

Teams from Shetland and the Scottish mainland will join a series of home sides at the Pickaquoy Centre, where competitions will be held at under-12, under-14 and under-16 level.

The festival, run by the Orkney Youth Development Group (OYDG), was last staged in 2001, and following its success, organisers were keen to hold another.

Joining the the home sides of Team Orkney , Pomona, Orkney under-12s and under-16s, will be Caithness United, Mintlaw Academy and Shetland.

A girls’ tournament will also take place. Orkney’s teams of Stromness ‘A’ and ‘B’, Kirkwall and North Isles will play Mintlaw Academy and Thurso High School.

Despite the Corinthian Cup match between Orkney and Caithness United’s under-18s being scrapped, some notable inter-county fixtures will be contested. Orkney will play Caithness for the under-16 OYDG Quaich and the under-12 OYDG Plate. In the under-16s category, Orkney will also play Shetland on Thursday evening.

As well as the competitive matches, various coaching sessions, which will be attended by a Ross County representative, will be held throughout the four days.
