Orkney
is playing host to a footballing feast this weekeend, with the second
Orkney Youth Football Festival.
Teams from Shetland and the Scottish
mainland will join a series of home sides at the Pickaquoy Centre,
where competitions will be held at under-12, under-14 and under-16
level.
The festival, run by the Orkney Youth
Development Group (OYDG), was last staged in 2001, and following
its success, organisers were keen to hold another.
Joining the the home sides of Team
Orkney , Pomona, Orkney under-12s and under-16s, will be Caithness
United, Mintlaw Academy and Shetland.
A girls tournament will also
take place. Orkneys teams of Stromness A and B,
Kirkwall and North Isles will play Mintlaw Academy and Thurso High
School.
Despite the Corinthian Cup match
between Orkney and Caithness Uniteds under-18s being scrapped,
some notable inter-county fixtures will be contested. Orkney will
play Caithness for the under-16 OYDG Quaich and the under-12 OYDG
Plate. In the under-16s category, Orkney will also play Shetland
on Thursday evening.
As well as the competitive matches,
various coaching sessions, which will be attended by a Ross County
representative, will be held throughout the four days.
