WESTRAY

The island of Westray, also known as the “Queen of the Isles” is the largest of the North Isles.

The island is an important breeding ground for seabirds and Grey seals – one of Orkney’s most popular wildlife attractions.

A visitors’ guide entitled The Craft and Heritage Trail covers attractions and craft workshops on both Westray and Papay.

Many of these workshops boast centuries-old craft work, such as chairmaking and wood turning, and it is even possible to try your hand at some of these activities.

The Bis Geos Hostel and Cottages are situated in the north west of the island, not far from the RSPB reserve at Noup Head.

A 16-bed hostel, which is divided into rooms with double bunks or two sets of double bunks, was once a traditional crofthouse. The building is a renovated barn which offers excellent hostel accommodation on the edge of Pierowall Village.

In Pierowall Village also is Seatter’s Gallery and Studio – a showcase for local art and craft.
