STRONSAY

Sitting at the top of the pier in Stronsay is the recently refurbished Stronsay Hotel – providing a warm welcome to visitors.

On Mill Bay, one of the island’s many sandy beaches, there is a bird reserve, which has seen several hundred bird species recorded by Sue and John Holloway, who set up the Stronsay Bird Reserve more than ten years ago.

Along the magnificent cliff walks of the east coast is the famous Vat of Kirbuster, a dramatic opening or gloup spanned by the finest natural arch in Orkney.

A nature walk in the southeast of the island helps you discover the wide range of wildlife present on the island, as well as some of the magnificent scenery Stronsay has to offer.

Recent archaeological investigations have revealed the presence of several settlements and field systems on Stronsay. These sites remain intact, and near the Hillock of Baywest - an elongated mound just above the shoreline - lies one of Orkney's earliest chambered tombs, dating from 3000BC or earlier.

Meanwhile, October is Grey seal pupping month on Stronsay. From the end of September and throughout the month of October, a number of Grey seals come ashore to give birth, hauling out on Linga Holm, the holms of Spurness in Stronsay and on Auskerry.
