PAPA STRONSAY

The tiny island of Papa Stronsay is most notable for the order of monks who are the island’s only inhabitants.

In 2000, the monks revealed ambitious plans to create a major monastery complex on the island, and work is now under way on the construction of the building, following the monks’ successful £2 million fundraising campaign to make the dream a reality.

The work will create around 40 cells, as well as a church capable of seating 50 people, a library and a cloister.

The monks also make their own dairy products in the traditional way from animals grazing on the island.
