FLOTTA AND GRAEMSAY

Flotta is known as the flat isle. It was a military base during both World Wars and boasts many tourist attractions from those wartime periods.

The gas flare, which is perhaps what Flotta is best known for, can be seen for miles around and signifies the Flotta oil terminal base, run by Talisman Energy, which celebrated a quarter of a century of operation earlier this year.

Many jobs have been secured at the terminal for decades and it still continues to bring much wealth to the islands of Orkney.

Graemsay has less than 30 residents, and is notable for its picturesque lighthouse and peace and quiet. The island is covered in wild flowers and could easily be described as a bird-watcher’s paradise.

The island, which lies between Stromness and Hoy, is the perfect place to visit for people wishing to experience a reclusive holiday.
