The Orcadian's brief guide to the north and south isles

Orkney's North and South Isles are continuing to offer new and exciting visitor attractions, making a trip to one of the smaller communities a must this summer.

The outer islands are easier than ever before to visit, with regular air and ferry services in operation throughout the year.

Orkney Ferries operate from Kirkwall harbour taking you to Westray, Papa Westray, Stronsay, Sanday, Eday, Shapinsay and North Ronaldsay. Or you can sail from Houton for Hoy and Flotta, from Stromness pier taking you to Graemsay, and from Tingwall to Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre.

The shipping company also have purpose-built premises at Kirkwall pierhead and to make planning a trip even easier just pop in to get an up-to-date timetable and prices. To book through Orkney Ferries call (01856) 872044.

British Airways offer flights operated by Loganair from Kirkwall Airport to six of the isles - Westray, Papa Westray, Stronsay, Sanday, Eday and North Ronaldsay. For passenger flight information call (01856) 872494.

The Outer Islands brochure, available from Kirkwall and Stromness Tourist Information Centres, covers everything you need to know about the islands - your only difficulty will be deciding which of the islands to visit first.
