South Ronaldsay man George Esson has spent the past 15 months on a mission – a mission to record the lives of those servicemen whose names are etched in stone.

Orcadians with £225,000 to spare might be interested in buying what is undoubtedly a fine piece of Orkney history.

Still bearing its original Orkney numberplates BS 1162 – this four and a half litre, 1928 Bentley, described as the “ultimate gentleman’s express” of the period, has been put on the market for a cool £225,000.

Author rewrites his own Orkney history book
 

History never stands still.

It is constantly being re-evaluated and revised to such an extent that when Orkney historian Willie Thomson was approached by his publishers, keen to reprint The History of Orkney - his book written 14 years ago - he decided it needed a substantial rewrite instead.

British Airways in the firing line after couple’s 18-hour marathon journey
 

A Holm couple are to complain to British Airways after a series of delays turned a family trip to Cornwall into an expensive farce.

Mrs Lilian Sinclair of Vindlyse, Holm, with her husband, Billy, flew to Plymouth earlier this month to visit their son in Cornwall, but a series of mishaps and delays meant that the couple endured an 18-hour marathon journey courtesy of Loganair, Bryman Airways and British Airways.

After an absence of one year, Orkney Heritage Trust’s Laura Grimond Awards – which recognise outstanding building and renovation work in Orkney buildings – have been announced this week.

Hebden Cottage in Eday, and the Nursery at Papdale Primary School have taken the top spots this year for the quality and appearance of their exteriors.

Orkney boy pays respect to terror victims at Ground Zero
  A young Orkney boy recently paid his respects to the thousands of lives lost during the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11.

While on holiday in the United States last month with his parents Ken and Glynis, nine-year-old Alistair Amer laid flowers at the site where the remains of the Twin Towers can be seen, now known simply as “Ground Zero”.

Two Orkneymen reach their century

 

Two Orcadian men reached the grand old age of 100 in October.

Born on October 15, 1901, Mr Alfie Merriman of Newgarth, Sandwick, enjoyed his 100th birthday on Monday, October 15. He is followed by Mr Willie Scott, Pickletillum, Deerness, who is 100 on Saturday.
