THE MACHINERY OF WAR

The Orcadian's Guide to the 20th CenturyThe machinery of war – both at sea and in the air – was a familiar sight for Orcadians through the 1920s and into the 1930s.

They were given a close-up view of some of Britain’s most deadly firepower during the annual visits to Scapa Flow by the Atlantic Fleet: renamed the Home Fleet in 1932.

The arrival of the ships brought not only a bonanza of trade for Kirkwall businesses as thousands of sailors poured ashore – more than once threatening to drink the town dry – but also gave Orcadians the opportunity to watch some dazzling flying displays by dozens of planes from the giant aircraft carriers.
