The Orcadian as we know it today was founded in 1798, in the relatively humble surroundings of a house in Victoria Street, Kirkwall. There, a book binding business was started by Magnus Anderson, a trade that was later extended into printing by his son, James Urquhart Anderson. It was James Urquhart Anderson who went on to establish The Orcadian newspaper in 1854, around 56 years later. In May 2007, The Orcadian was acquired by a new company, Orkney Media Group Limited, along with the newspaper Orkney Today. Both newspapers will continue to be published independently and have their own editors and reporting staff. James and Christine Miller own 50 per cent of the new company and S. and J. D. Robertson Group Limited own the other half of Orkney Media Group Limited (OMG). The directors of OMG are James and Christine Miller, John D. M. Robertson with Sinclair Robertson appointed managing director. James Miller and John D. M. Robertson are joint chairmen. |
