MSP welcomes cable news but urges blackspot homes to register for broadband

Orkney MSP, Jim Wallace, has welcomed news that the Faroese company, Føroya Tele, has signed a contract to lay a telecoms cable from Faroe to Scotland, via Orkney and Shetland.

He said: “I have just received assurances from the Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, Nicol Stephen, that the needs of island communities will be fully considered when programming the work to connect up broadband blackspots.”

Among the issues to be taken into account is the known level of unfulfilled demand, so Mr Wallace is urging those without broadband to apply so their “demand” is registered.

Business manager Kevin Balfour said the school was losing a number of car parking spaces, resulting in motorists parking “inappropriately” and increasing the risk of an accident.

He said: “The only way to try and improve the safety around the school is to try and keep the number of vehicles travelling to and from school to a minimum. We are acutely aware that this will be inconvenient for all concerned.”

Meetings will be held with affected staff over the next two weeks so they can have the offer explained and have access to free independent legal advice.”
Disappointing start to electoral sessions

Information sessions outlining changes to Orkney’s electoral system got off to a disappointing start on Saturday, when nobody turned up to the meeting in Rousay.

Over the next few months the sessions are being combined with Community Council meetings across the county, with all areas to be visited by March 31.

Domestic abuse figures on the increase

The number of women reporting attacks from abusive partners has doubled in Orkney in recent years.

According to figures, provided under the Freedom of Information Act, 30 women were victims of domestic violence in the county in 2005. This compares to 14 in 2004 and 17 in 2003.

However, Sergeant Gordon Deans attributed the increase to raised awareness of the services available to domestic abuse victims rather than an actual increase in incidents.
