Sports Awards shortlist finalised

The shortlist for the 2006 Orkney Sports Awards was finalised this week.

An independent judging panel, representing a wide range of sports in Orkney, considered 74 nominations for the the ceremony, which will be held at the Pickaquoy Centre on November 10.

A further independent judging panel will select the winner of each category before the ceremony.

The short list for each category is as follows:

  • Sportsman of the year: Thomas Fay (athletics); Kevin Groundwater (football); Steven Rendall (golf).
  • Sportswoman of the year: Kirsty Brown (octopush); Mags MacRae (athletics); Catherine Symons (table tennis).
  • Junior male sportsperson of the year: David Delday (badminton); David Miller (athletics); Shaun Raeburn (swimming).
  • Junior female sportsperson of the year: Inga Kemp (hockey and netball); Claire Wilson (athletics); Karen Wood (netball and athletics).
  • Veteran sportsman of the year: Norman McLennan (athletics); Shawn Tait (athletics and squash); Nigel Thomson (athletics).
  • Veteran sportswoman of the year: Doris Leonard (triathlon and cross-country); Moira Ross (hockey); Betty Stanger (squash and netball).
  • Team of the year: Junior inter-county athletics team; Orkney Pony Club games team; Orkney women’s volleyball team.
  • Coach of the year: Alison Davis (athletics); Sarah Reid (pony club); Belinda Warnock (volleyball).
  • Services to sport: Mike Berston (football); Ian Gibson (swimming); Ronnie Rendall (football); Jim Scollie (darts).
  • Photo of the year: Emily Farrer; Rae Slater; Rod Thorne.
