With broadband commitment met, Executive turns attention to "out of reach" households

The Scottish Executive has met its commitment to provide broadband services to every community in Scotland by the end of 2005, according to Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen.

Orkney’s Finstown, Harray, Holm, Sandwick, St Margaret’s Hope, Stromness and Westray exchanges were among the 378 across Scotland that now have broadband access.

However, this leaves 15 of Orkney’s smaller exchanges, serving around 2,500 households, without high-speed internet access.

And, due to technical limitations, broadband is not available to those who live too far from their exchange.

While the Executive is not committed to providing broadband to every household, it has been working to identify any clusters of 'out of reach' households and is developing the next steps for providing solutions to these 'clusters' over 2006.

Orkney's RSPA to benefit from cash boost
Orkney is to receive £100,000 as part of a £2.2 million package from the Scottish Executive.

The money has been allocated to 22 Rural Service Priority Areas (RSPA) across Scotland by way of their Community Planning Partnerships (CPPs). Each CPP will identify the services they want to improve in their area.

Orkney's RSPA covers Sanday, Stronsay and North Ronaldsay.

Discussions are being held with Community Planning Partnerships to agree the priority services for improvement, with targets to be agreed by end March 2006.
