Special service for Lucy's wedding
day
Lucy Rendall and Mark Flett from Kirkwall will tie the knot today, Friday, in St Magnus Cathedral - but this will be no ordinary wedding. The service will include a piece of music specially written for Lucy when, in 1980, she became the first baby born in Rackwick for 32 years. Her birth inspired one of George Mackay Brown's poems, Lullaby for Lucy, which was then set to music by composer, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. When Lucy, now 24, marries her fiancé Mark, also 24, the Mayfield Singers will perform Lullaby for Lucy, at the wedding. Lucy told The Orcadian: When we first decided to get married, we were thinking of different things we could do, and when we had agreed to get married in the cathedral, we decided to have the tune, as that was the place that it was originally played. It will be the last time I will be called Lucy Rendall, so we thought it was quite appropriate, she added. Lucy and Mark got engaged in March last year. We had a few months of thinking about when to get married, but we had no strong ideas at that time. The couple decided to ask the Mayfield Singers to perform the very apt piece of music at the service. We knew that they had sung Maxs music before and it is because it is a piece really for a choir. she explained. Lucy says that growing up knowing she had inspired the work of two of the most prestigious arts names in the country was definitely a blessing, although she didnt always understand. When I was peedie, I didnt know much about it. I didnt understand what all the fuss was about. I realise now that it is played all over the place. It has hit home that its a really big privilege to have, and I have grown to appreciate it. I have also grown to appreciate the tune more. At the time I didnt really understand it much. Lucy and Mark are sure that in choosing Lullaby for Lucy, they have made the right choice for their wedding, as an appropriate symbol for the next stage of Lucys life. Lucy added: I think its extra special as all my family will be there, and it is my last time as Lucy Rendall. Director of the Mayfield Singers, Neil Price, said: Its just so lovely to be asked to do it. I think its a really nice idea that it is the music that will be playing as she arrives. Its very appropriate, and almost like shes going on to the next stage. |
