on halting junk mail
There are organisations that can help with these problems. Unsolicited phonecalls Registering with the Telephone Preference Service can stop companies making unsolicited phonecalls. Registration is free and can be made by phoning 0207 291 3320 or online at www.tpsonline.org.uk Silent Calls Silent calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment, which dial more numbers than there are operators available. This can be distressing as on answering such calls there may be no one there. Registering with the Silent Callguard Service on 0870 444 3969 will vastly reduce the number of silent calls received. Again, registration is free. Junk Mail To reduce junk mail you can register with the Mailing Preference Service. This can be done by phoning 0207 291 3310, online at www.mpsonline.org.uk, or by writing to -
Faxes Register with the Fax Preference Service on 0207 291 3330 or online at www.fpsonline.org.uk Junk E-mail The Direct Marketing Association operates the e-mail preference service, which is designed to cut down the number of unsolicited, commercial e-mails. Registration is free by phoning 0207 291 3322 or online at www.dmaconsumers.org Further information is available from Trading Standards at OIC. Texts / Short Message Service (SMS) There is no text preference service. However, since December 2003, it has been illegal to send an unsolicited SMS marketing message to an individual. If you have a complaint about the receipt of such a message, contact the Office of the Information Commissioner on 01625 545 745 or online at www.dataprotection.gov.uk .
