OIC Trading Standards issue guidelines on halting junk mail
(Story dated: Friday, July 2, 2004)

Junk MailMany people contact the Trading Standards Section of Orkney Islands Council wanting to know if they can stop unsolicited phone calls or if they can reduce the amount of junk mail they receive.

There are organisations that can help with these problems.

Unsolicited phonecalls

Registering with the Telephone Preference Service can stop companies making unsolicited phonecalls. Registration is free and can be made by phoning 0207 291 3320 or online at www.tpsonline.org.uk

Silent Calls

Silent calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment, which dial more numbers than there are operators available. This can be distressing as on answering such calls there may be no one there.

Registering with the Silent Callguard Service on 0870 444 3969 will vastly reduce the number of silent calls received. Again, registration is free.

Junk Mail

To reduce junk mail you can register with the Mailing Preference Service. This can be done by phoning 0207 291 3310, online at www.mpsonline.org.uk, or by writing to -

Faxes

Register with the Fax Preference Service on 0207 291 3330 or online at www.fpsonline.org.uk

Junk E-mail

The Direct Marketing Association operates the e-mail preference service, which is designed to cut down the number of unsolicited, commercial e-mails.

Registration is free by phoning 0207 291 3322 or online at www.dmaconsumers.org

Further information is available from Trading Standards at OIC.

Texts / Short Message Service (SMS)

There is no text preference service. However, since December 2003, it has been illegal to send an unsolicited SMS marketing message to an individual.

If you have a complaint about the receipt of such a message, contact the Office of the Information Commissioner on 01625 545 745 or online at www.dataprotection.gov.uk . If the message contains a premium rate number, contact ICSTIS on 020 7940 7474 or online at www.icstis.org.uk

For further information please contact Orkney Islands Council's Trading Standards Section on 01856 873535.
