Canadian musicians return to Orkney
(Story dated: Saturday, March 20, 2004)

Young traditional music group Hadhirgaan are looking forward to a reunion with some of the musicians they met in Canada, at a concert this Tuesday evening at Kirkwall Grammar School.

The group of 70 musicians from the Miles Macdonell Collegiate School in Winnipeg visited Orkney before, in 2001, after meeting and performing with the members of Hadhirgaan during their tour of Canada in 2000.

There will be a free acoustic concert on Monday, March 22, in St Magnus Cathedral.

Among the 70 musicians there will be a five-piece vocal act named Prodigy, a stage band and a choir, who will perform a range of gospel, blues, soul and swing.

Hadhirgaan will perform at the concert alongside the Canadians, and the Orkney School Swing band will also make an appearance.

Douglas Montgomery who taught and led the young musicians of Hadhirgaan to Canada told The Orcadian: “They took some of our tunes last year and mixed them in with some Canadian songs, and they’ve put them on their album.

“We’ll be performing some of these at the concert next week.”

The concert on Tuesday night is due to start at 7.30pm in the Kirkwall Grammar School dining hall.

Tickets cost £5 and £3 concession, and will be available from the members of Hadhirgaan, at the school office, or at the door of the concert.

Admission to the acoustic concert in the Cathedral is free.
