2004 Sports Awards shortlist finalised

The shortlist for the 2004 Orkney Sports Awards has been finalised.

An independent judging panel, representing a wide range of sports in Orkney, considered 83 nominations for the ten award categories for the ceremony, to be held at the Pickaquoy Centre on Friday, November 12.

Last year the event attracted over 240 people and even greater numbers are anticipated this year.

The short list for each category is as follows:

Sportsman of the year

  • Alan J Clouston (clay pigeon)
  • Bobby Oag (triathlon, swimming and athletics)
  • Nigel Thomson (athletics)

Sportswoman of the year

  • Karen Brough (hockey)
  • Helen Cromarty (athletics)
  • Shona Croy (golf)

Veteran sportsman of the year

  • Colin ‘Paddy’ Kirkpatrick (football)
  • Ewen Taylor (triathlon)
  • William Sichel (athletics)

Veteran sportswoman of the year

  • Moira Ross (hockey)
  • Shona Slater (hockey and netball)
  • Betty Stanger (squash)

Junior male sportsperson of the year

  • Adam Bews (squash and badminton)
  • Thomas Faye (athletics and triathlon)
  • David Miller (athletics)

Junior female sportsperson of the year

  • Hannah Johnston (hockey and badminton)
  • Bryony Muir (athletics)
  • Karen Wood (athletics, netball, hockey and volleyball)

Team of the year

  • Junior inter-county 4 x 100m girls relay team
  • Orkney squash team
  • Kirkwall Rovers Football Club

Coach of the year

  • Adrian Askew (various)
  • Ian Gorn (badminton)
  • Norman Shearer (athletics)

Services to sport

  • Adrian Askew (various)
  • Duncan Currie (motocross)
  • James ‘Pye’ Groundwater (rugby)
  • John Manson (football)
  • Rosemary Newton (various)
