2003
Island Games - results so far
The 2003 Island Games got under way in Guernsey on Saturday, with Orkney's competitors taking part in the grand opening ceremony. So far Orkney has competed in table tennis, football, clay pigeon, triathlon and badminton, but have been overwhelmed by the opposition. In the table tennis Orkney were beaten by Aland, Faeroe and Guernsey, although Orkney player Catherine Symons did achieve a number of good victories. In the Clay Target - ISSF Skeet Team, shooters Alan Clouston and John Craigie took fifth place with a team score of 130. Meanwhile, Antoine Pietri and Dennis Stevenson were ninth in the Olympic Trap. In Football Orkney were beaten 6-1 by Rhodes, Orkney's only goal from Eoin Anderson. The badminton saw Orkney fall 5-0 to Greenland. In the men's triathlon Orkney's Torquil Clyde finished in eleventh place with a time of two hours and nine minutes. Gavin Walls came in at number 20, with 17-year-old Bobby Oag in 39th position - not bad for his first full triathlon. The men's triathlon team took fifth place in the team event with a combined time of 6:50:52. Today sees the continuation of table tennis, badminton and football and the start of the archery and swimming competitions. |
