Constitution Day celebrations 2003

a.m. approx. Flowers will be placed on Norwegian war graves in St Olaf
Cemetery and also in the graveyards at Lyness and Westray by Orkney
Norway Friendship Association Members and Norwegian visitors.
Note: Bus for Norwegian guests leaves the Kirkwall Pierhead at 10.30
am. for St Olaf Cemetery.

p.m. Constitution Day Recital featuring the Orkney Traditional Music
Group (fiddlers and accordionists) and Fran Gray, Lesley MacLeod and
Hamish Bayne in St Magnus Cathedral playing Orcadian and Scandanavian
Traditional Music.
- 3
p.m. Flag bearers, children and Kirkwall Pipe Band proceed with the
Annual Norwegian Constitution Day Parade or Tog commencing at the Kirkwall
Pier head and proceeding to St Magnus Cathedral.
- Norwegian
National Anthem followed by Kirkwall Junior Pipe Band playing on the
Kirk Green.
- Orkney
Islands Council Convener Stephen Hagen will then welcome the Norwegian
visitors on behalf of the people of Orkney and Mr Svein Ludvigsen, Minister
for Fisheries, Norway, will reply. At the end of the speeches, the Sotra
band and dancers from Norway will perfom a short concert lasting about
15 minutes.
This event will be held inside the Cathedral if wet, otherwise on the
Kirk Green. (Note If the event is outdoors then Broad Street
will be closed to traffic).
- The
Kirkwall Junior and Senior Pipe Band will play on Broad Street at the
end of the event while the Tog reforms on the Kirk Green and proceeds
to the Town Hall.

p.m. Bus for Norwegian visitors leaves Kirkwall for Stromness.
- 7.30
for 7.45 p.m. Constitution Day Party with buffet and dance in Stromness
Academy. Tickets priced £12.50 from Pentarq, Albert Street, Kirkwall,
or Connie Grieve, telephone Stromness 850636.
