'Old Guard' return to committee positions
(Story dated: May 15, 2003)

It was success for the ‘old guard’ of Orkney Islands Council when the new committee chairmen were appointed today.

No newly-elected councillors won power.

  • Mrs Janice Annal retained chairmanship of education.
  • Councillor Jim Foubister continues as chairman of the OIC’s development committee.
  • Councillor Keith Johnson remains chairman of social services and housing and Mrs Ann Sutherland was again elected chair of the environment, planning and protective services.
  • Councillor Mike Drever has become chairman of the OIC’s recreation and cultural services committee.
  • Captain Bob Sclater was elected to chair the transportation and infrastructure committee.
  • Councillor Roderick McLeod, who was previously vice-chairman of the monitoring and audit committee, takes over as chairman from Fred Groundwater who lost his seat at the recent council elections.
  • The former vice-chair of the direct services board, Councillor John Hamilton, was elected chairman in succession to Eoin Scott who failed to get back into the OIC.
