Kirkwall Lifeboat was launched in the early hours of this morning to transfer police officers over to Shapinsay and to carry out a search for a missing person.

The crew was paged just before 12.30am and headed for the scene.

A search was begun on the east side of Shapinsay by the crew, who were then requested to go alongside at Balfour Village as the missing person had been found.

The casualty was then taken to Kirkwall, transferred over to an ambulance crew, and was treated for the effects of exposure.

The lifeboat was back on station, refuelled and ready for service again by 2am.
