Orkney RFC prepare for league opener

Orkney RFC will be hoping to get their league campaign off to the perfect start in Perth.
Orkney RFC will be hoping to get their league campaign off to the perfect start in Perth.

Orkney RFC are set to begin life in the national leagues as their BT National League Division 3 campaign is due to get underway this afternoon. The squad has travelled down to take on Perthshire RFC, who finished seventh last year, for the game due to kick off at 11:30am at the Gannochy Sports Pavillion in Perth.

Perthshire will pose a tough test but Orkney will be hoping to make a positive start to the campaign. They have undertaken intensive training during the close season and warmed up for this game with a 17-21 victory gainst Heriots 2nd XV in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago.

Both teams will be coming into the game, knowing what to expect having both competed in the RBS Caledonia League Division 1 in the 2013/14 season. Orkney beat their Perth counterparts — who won the league title that year to gain promotion to the national league —  30-23 in Kirkwall in 2013 before going onto lose narrowly in the corresponding league fixture and in the RBS Caledonia Regional Shield.
