Effect of weather on agricultural industry prompts meeting next month

The Orkney branch of the NFUS are due to  meet with Liam McArthur MSP and Orkney Islands Council convener, Councillor Steven Heddle, to discuss the weather-related problems in the county.

The unusually high amount of rainfall has meant that many farmers in the county have suffered setbacks, with some reducing stock numbers and many anticipating having to buy in extra feed stocks.

Secretary for the local branch of the NFUS, Kenny Slater, confirmed today that representatives from the union would meet with Mr McArthur and Councillor Heddle in mid-July.

At a branch meeting in Kirkwall last Thursday, members were hesitant about calling on the Scottish Government for assistance, although there was an admission that if the weather stays as wet as it has been, then may be necessary.
