Orkney Islands Council has said that the ferry Graemsay is expected to be out of service for longer than expected.

The ferry is in Peterhead to have new engines fitted, with the council saying that the two engines have arrived, but the gear boxes were not included as part of the delivery.

An OIC statement said: “Orkney Islands Council Marine Services is in urgent discussion with the key suppliers and is asking for the gear boxes to be delivered as soon as possible. The response so far has been positive, but with no clear date yet for when the gear boxes will arrive.”

It went on to say: “The Graemsay was due to return to service during the second week in May. A delay beyond this now looks likely – with a further update provided when more information is available.”

Meantime, the Golden Mariana will operate the Graemsay to Hoy service, with the Flamborough Light carrying out a cargo run on a Tuesdays at 1pm.

The Westray to Papa Westray service will be operated by the Kirkwall Bay from Sunday May 3. Up to 10 passengers can be carried on each run.

Other potential options to provide cover for ferry users are also being actively explored according to the council.
