Time running out for entries to ‘Homemade in the Parish’

shutterstock_263108756Orkney’s parishes are being urged to get their entries in soon for a community-wide, home-produce competition taking place this year.

Organised by Orkney Food and Drink, the Homemade in the Parish event will see teams from throughout the islands submit products across a range of categories — everything from jams, chutneys, shortbreads and cakes, to home brew, cheeses and savoury pies. There will also be a special ‘Buns for Bairns’ baking category for children under 12.

A panel of judges will sample the parish team produce at an event in Kirkwall Grammar School on May 9, before deciding on category winners and ultimately awarding a special Parish Cup.

So far, six parishes — Deerness, Eday, Firth, Holm, Orphir and Rousay — have confirmed they will take part, with Sanday, Shapinsay and Birsay likely to follow.

With the competition date fast approaching, organisers are keen for Orkney’s remaining parishes to sign up.

Parishes can find out more about the competition, and enter online, at www.orkneyfoodanddrink.com
