Waste collection drop-in sessions get under way

The first of a series of OIC drop-in sessions – part of a consultation into waste collection and recycling – takes place in Westray today.

The council is asking how folk in the isles feel the service could be implemented in future so there is a greater opportunity for residents to recycle closer to home.

The meetings will also give residents the opportunity to help shape the development of a new energy strategy for Orkney.

Jan Falconer, the council’s head of strategic development and regeneration, said: “The strategy will look at key issues such transport, affordable warmth and fuel poverty, energy security and how Orkney can benefit from taking a low carbon approach in the way we use energy.

“We’re also developing an action plan to address these issues. I hope people in the communities we visit will find it interesting to discuss this with us – the views and ideas we receive will feed into the evolution of the strategy and the action plan.”

Westray – Tuesday, March 3. 7pm – 9pm at the Westray School.
Sanday – Wednesday, March 4. 7.30pm – 9.30pm at the Community School.
Stronsay – Thursday, March 12. 7-9pm at the Community Hall.
Graemsay – Friday, March 13. 12.30pm – 3.30pm – venue to be confirmed.
Hoy – Friday, March 13. 7-9pm at the North Walls Community School.
Shapinsay – Saturday, March 14. 1pm – 3.30pm at the Community School
Flotta – Wednesday, March 18. 8.30am – noon and 1pm – 3pm in the Flotta Community School.
Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre – Saturday, March 21. 11.30am – 12.30pm and 2.30pm-4pm at the Rousay School.
North Ronaldsay – Monday, March 23. 7.30pm – 9.30pm venue to be confirmed.
Papa Westray – Tuesday, March 24. Times to be confirmed, at St Ann’s Kirk.
Eday – to be confirmed shortly.
