Faroe shipyard delegation set to visit

A delegation from a Faroese shipyard is to visit Orkney next week on a fact-finding mission to the islands.

Weather permitting, the visit is set to take place over March 10-11, after the original trip, which had been set for earlier in the year, had to be cancelled because of storms in the North Atlantic.

The representatives are from Mest, the biggest shipyard in the Faroe Islands, which operates in two locations in Faroe, one in Tórshavn and one at Skála. The company has built and repaired vessels since 1936, including ferries for Shetland, and has approximately 200 employees.

On the visit to Orkney will be Petur Jacobsen, chairman of Mest, along with Mouritz Mohr, managing director of the company.

They will be accompanied to Orkney by Faroese business consultant Jóhan Mortensen, who is no stranger to the county and enthusiastic about creating links between the islands.

The visitors plan to meet Orkney Islands Council and EMEC, and are also interested in meeting other businesses with an interest in their visit.

Jóhan Mortensen can be contacted at johan_m@olivant.fo if any local companies would like to meet up during the trip.
