Local construction firm Orkney Builders Ltd scooped a top industry award last week in recognition of their commitment to apprentice training.

The company won the SME Apprentice Employer of the Year 2014, and last Wednesday, November 19, Charlie and Katherine Kemp travelled to London to accept the award at a ceremony in the Plaisteres Hall.

Stephen Kemp from Orkney Builders said: “It was fantastic to receive recognition for the effort we’ve put in over recent years with apprenticeship training.

“At present we have thirteen apprentices at various stages of their training and although it takes work to administer the apprentice programme it pays us dividends in the long-term as we have an excellent workforce with many of our tradesmen having developed through CITB apprenticeships within the company.”

Mr Kemp added: “We are fortunate to have an excellent training facility here at Orkney College that ensures our apprentices never have to leave the county for training or skills testing.”
