NHS screening for men over 65

A simple scan to detect a condition that affects one in 20 men over 65 is being offered by NHS Orkney. The condition is an abdominal aortic aneurysm (known as ‘triple A’— AAA) which is potentially fatal. Screening will take place at the Balfour Hospital on September 30 and October 1 and is by invitation only.

According to NHS Orkney, most men with the condition will be unaware they have it until it ruptures, which in most cases proves fatal. However, a simple ultrasound scan can detect an aneurysm and results can be instantly available.

NHS Orkney stress that the majority of men who are screened will not require any follow-up . However, depending on the results, further scans or a referral to the vascular unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, may be required.

Men aged over 65 who have never been for AAA screening can obtain contact details for the AAA screening service from their GP practice, or by calling NHS inform on 0800 22 44 88.
