Scotland will remain part of the United Kingdom after 55 per cent of voters rejected independence in last night’s historic referendum.

Of all 32 Scottish local authorities, Orkney had the highest proportion of No voters with 67.2 per cent, and an overall turnout of 83.7 per cent.

Nationally, an electorate of 4,283,392 people saw 2,001,962 (55 per cent) vote to retain the union, while 1,617,989 (45 per cent) backed Scottish independence. Overall, there was an 84.6 per cent turnout.
