Wartime commemorations earns council head a BEM

Karen Greaves.

Orkney Islands Council’s head of executive support, Karen Greaves, has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours List.

The award recognises her involvement in the planning and organisation of First World War commemorative events in Orkney during 2016.

OIC chief executive Alistair Buchan said: “The poppies display at St Magnus Cathedral, the national commemoration of the Battle of Jutland and the special service marking the loss of HMS Hampshire placed Orkney under an international spotlight – and the world saw our community at its best.

“An enormous amount of work went into making these events so memorable and so successful. Agencies and organisations, individuals and local businesses were all involved, as were local schools, a big team of volunteers and a massive community effort.

“I am proud of the council’s role in the commemorations and that Karen, who led our management efforts, has been recognised in this way.”

Ms Greaves, who joined the council in 2002, said: “I am honoured, delighted and surprised to be awarded a BEM.

“Being involved in the WW1 commemorations is something I will never forget. This award isn’t for me alone – it’s for everyone who played a part in making the events such a special time for our community.”
