2016 Orkney Sports Awards tonight

A memorable evening is in store for Orkney sport this evening, with the Orkney Sports Awards being held at Kirkwall Grammar School.

A total of 31 athletes, teams, volunteers, coaches and officials are up for awards in nine categories — Sportsperson of the Year, Young Sportsperson of the Year, Team of the Year, Young Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Official of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year and School Sports Volunteer of the Year.

There is a wide-ranging number of sports represented at the Awards, with minority sports such as fencing, darts, kickboxing, pool and climbing represented, alongside more established sports such as football, rugby, swimming, badminton and netball.

The awards night is set to be co-hosted by Orkney MSP Liam McArthur and BBC Radio Orkney’s Robbie Fraser, while sportscotland chief executive Stewart Harris will also be in attendance.

The evening is set to start at 7.30pm, with the doors opening at 7pm.
