Clay pigeon shooters narrowly miss out on bronze medal

Orkney’s clay pigeon shooting team were, yesterday, just one point off claiming the first silverware for the county at the 14th NatWest Island Games, in the Isle of Wight.

Derek Firth and Alan Clouston amassed 159 points in the Olympic Skeet Team shoot, finishing in fourth place, behind bronze medal winners Guernsey, who scored 160.

Lifeboat goes to aid of stuck yacht

The Kirkwall Lifeboat was called to assist a yacht that had become caught in rope on Saturday.

The propellor of the Diva became entangled in the water between Iceland Skerry and Thieves Holm.

The lifeboat attended the scene, after receiving the call at 9.30pm, and freed the yacht.

Island Games begin on the Isle of Wight

The 14th NatWest Island Games get under way on the Isle of Wight today, following an opening ceremony yesterday.

Orkney is represented in nine sports – archery, athletics, badminton, clay pigeon, cycling, golf, sailing, shooting and swimming.

A total of 3,000 competitors, from 25 island groups, are taking part in the six-day tournament.
